Corporate Video: The Good, The Bad & the Ugly (Part 1)
Mastering Corporate Video Production
This blog is for those who've grasped the basics and seek deeper insights into corporate video production. It’s not meant to be pretentious or jaded—just a candid look at my decade-long journey in making corporate films.
My Corporate Video Nightmare
Imagine 90s corporate rock, a contrived voice-over, and stock videos ticking every HR box. Employees holding signs spelling "Think Outside the Box," looking utterly defeated. I wake up in a cold sweat, recalling my nightmare.
In reality, corporate videos are my bread and butter, making up 90% of my work. And despite the nightmare, I love creating them.
Why I Love Corporate Videos
Corporate videos are a playground of problem-solving in messaging, timing, and overcoming obstacles. When a eureka moment breaks through and connects with consumers, it's magical. But it’s also the most challenging, with red tape and roadblocks aplenty.
I've worked with diverse industries, from manufacturers to nonprofits. While messaging and audience differ, many video production principles remain the same.
Tips and Tricks
Find an Emotional Angle: Even monotonous topics can be fascinating if you're passionate. Bring in outsiders for fresh perspectives.
Use Natural Light: Avoid boxy, windowless rooms. Natural light offers better depth and color consistency.
Keep it Short: Avoid long videos unless necessary. Stay concise and engaging.
Avoid Vague Phrases: Phrases like “We believe” lack substance. Show actions instead of empty words.
Write Conversational Scripts: Scripts should sound natural and conversational, not like academic papers.
Focus on Core Messages: Don't overload videos with content. Communicate one core emotion or idea.
Be Cautious with Comedy: Avoid outdated trends and forced humor.
Consider Sound: Note any background noises during shoots. Consistent hums can be removed, but inconsistent sounds are problematic.
Plan Thoroughly: Keep everyone informed and prepared. Proper planning ensures smoother shoot days.
Pre-Visualize: Invest time in pre-visualization. A well-prepared shoot saves time and resources.
Corporate video production is a journey of continuous learning. With the right approach, you can create impactful and engaging videos that resonate with your audience.
